Right now, a lot of us are feeling the pinch financially. When you have debts, this can feel a million times worse.
Laura spoke on BBC Morning Live about new figures that showed over 10,000 people in England and Wales became personally insolvent in April 2025 alone – so if you’re struggling with money, you’re definitely not alone.
But what if you could hit pause on the panic?

Breathing Space is a powerful, government-backed scheme that gives you 60 days of legal protection from most types of debt-related stress..
It stops creditors from adding interest or fees to your debts or taking enforcement action.
And while you’ve got those 60 days, you’ll work with a regulated debt adviser to come up with a solid plan.
You can only apply once every 12 months.
Who can apply?
Breathing Space is a scheme for those that live in England or Wales, though Scotland has a similar scheme too.
You must have a qualifying debt, not be in an existing DRO, IVA or bankruptcy and not have used Breathing Space in the last 12 months.
To apply, speak to a free, regulated debt adviser. They’ll assess your situation and submit the application on your behalf. You can find one through MoneyHelper.
And when the 60 days are up?
That’s your cue to take action. The protections end, so interest and fees can start again, and creditors can get back in touch. But you don’t need to panic – if you’ve used the time well and created a plan with your debt adviser, you’ll be in a stronger position to keep going.
Final word from Financielle:
Breathing Space is just that – space to breathe. But it’s also your time to take action. Use it wisely, get support, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You deserve financial peace, and this might be the first step to getting it.
